L'origine Du Monde - This Is Not A Porn Song
A Snowflake sponsored group show
Curated by Paul Boulitreau
Aardklop May 2010;
The human body has been a great, maybe the most important, artistic and cultural vehicle through ages of Art History.
L'Origine du monde by Gustave Courbet, Le grand nu bleu by Henri Matisse, les Erotiques by Pablo Picasso or L'Olympia by Manet (not to mention Michelangelo, Francis Bacon or Rubens...) are as many examples of the controversy that exists between eroticism and pornography, suggesting and showing, questioning and stating, avant-garde and classicism.
Recently, we have had explicit overreactions by political and religious actors as they were confronted by art pieces showing human bodies … translating ideas of desire, social and political behaviour, sexual inequities and abuses...
Thinking that artists have to keep fighting against any kind of censure, any alteration of their fields of expression, it is important to strongly remind ourselves through an artistic answer, that we are independent of any pressure or lobbying coming from academies, political, religious or social institutions.
…I encourage artists to privilege eroticism to pornography; suggestion to provocation, and to assume a strong intellectual content in the artworks to avoid any lack of meaning or gratuity.
